Laffites Cove, a prestigious bay side neighborhood on the West End of Galveston Island is named after the famous Pirate, Jean Laffite. Jean Laffite had a fortress on Galveston Island before it was even known as Galveston. There are three entrances to Laffites Cove, Cove Lane, Eckert Dr. and Foremast Dr. Between the Eckert and Cove Lane entrances is a historical marker about the Battle of Three Trees, which occurred in 1817 between Jean Laffite’s men and the Karankawa Indians. There has been controversy over the spelling of Laffite; however, Laffite’s signature was clearly two f’s and 1 t and the internationally known Jean Laffite Society is based on the island. Laffites Cove is known for its beautifully manicured tropical landscapes. Hurricane Ike’s salt surge took out centuries old oak trees in 2008, except for the area known as The Ridge. After Ike, the common areas of Laffites Cove were re-designed and re-planted in the tropical style you see now. Verdant swaths of palms, dwarf oleanders, landscape roses, dozens of varieties of perennials give year-round color at the three entrances and cul-de-sac plantings. Nighttime is delightful with the entrances artistically illuminated. The Laffites Cove POA oversees and manages these garden-like areas.
